Ian Lawrence explains more about the painting 'Sandstone':

"A revisiting of an earlier style before I used gilding on my works, but given a new twist with the shimmering orange. The name is not meant literally; it is more the sense of looking closely at sandstone and the slight variants of colour that I’m referring to. The picture is given form by the downward line, but this doesn’t take away from the quiet of the piece."
