The Fibonacci sequence appears in nature through growth patterns that optimise space, such as the arrangement of seeds in a sunflower or the scales of a pinecone. In this piece I have depicted a spiral like composition of butterflies in mid flight – fixing the butterflies in a radial spin that reveals the intense patterns of the under wing against the hot red of the upper wing for a real two tone effect. I have used the Red Lacewing butterfly and digitally worked in ghostly figures within the patterns to another layer of reveal.
Connections: The structural proportions of butterfly wings are often linked to the Golden Ratio, which helps optimize the aerodynamics required for their unique flight patterns. Furthermore the connection between butterflies and Fibonacci’s sequence can also be found within the placement and size of spots and colour patterns on certain species, like the Blue Morpho, can often be predicted using Fibonacci ratios. These mathematically-aligned patterns are thought to assist in camouflage or mating displays.
‘Sequence’ uniquely celebrates this close connection to the natural world. It is a connection begging for a match up.
