‘Orb’ is a study of butterflies in a repeat radial formation. Its configuration conveying a radiating sun like orb. The Pangoline like scale effect of the butterflies reference the tiny scales that cover the wings of every butterfly type - so tiny in size that each scale is typically a single pigment colour, while brilliant blues and greens are created by light refraction.
Viewing the artwork directly face on at a 90° position shows a range soft oranges, yellows and black and white of pattern of the underwing. When moving your viewing position to any other angle the hot red of the upper wing is exposed to create a real two tone effect and flash of colour. I have used the Red Lacewing butterfly and digitally worked in ghostly figures within the patterns to create another layer of reveal.
